Mazda CX-3 Review

With small SUVs on the rise, we thought we’d test out one of the latest to hit the market, the Mazda CX-3, and after just a couple of drives, it’s easy to see why it’s pushing ahead of the pack. First up, the new Mazda boasts a sportier feel than its competitors. Despite the Honda HRV and Nissan Qashqai having more room, the CX-3 features Mazda’s ‘Kodo’ design, which gives the car a smarter and sportier look.

When first hopping inside the car, i couldn’t decide if it felt like a miniature SUV, tall station wagon or an oversized hatchback. When i started driving, i found it had benefits of them all – spacious and high enough off the ground for great vision, yet compact and low enough to feel like you weren’t going to tip over when putting it into some corners.

One design element i found particularly attractive is the blacked out skirt that stretches the length of the car making for a sleek, streamlined finish that suits all eight colours of the CX-3 range.

The neat finish continues inside the car with all the latest Mazda devices included, starting with the 7-inch MZD Touch Screen. With easy access available in front of the handbrake, the console provides navigation, internet applications and a reversing camera which helped me get into some seriously tight spots around the CBD.

The interior conveniences don’t stop there with a place for your phone next to the in-built USB outputs, Bluetooth capability, twin cup holders and a sunglasses pocket above your windscreen.

We were testing out the top of the line Akari model, and found that the seats in the front provided supreme comfort with the looks to match due to a black suede leather finish. On top of this, striking red leather trims border the gearbox while a smooth, sturdy dashboard adds to the smart feel.

Looking to cater for all drivers, the CX-3 has four model grades. Two transmission types are available as well as all wheel drive and front wheel drive options. The top two models are fitted with 18-inch alloy wheels to enhance the sports feel as well as a selection of extra comfort and impressive safety features such as advanced blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, rear cross traffic alert and smart city brake support. All these functions really did make me feel more comfortable as I drove around the city praying to avoid any prangs before I had to hand back the keys.
