PARKROYAL On Pickering review | A Well-Designed & Sustainable Hotel In Singapore

The PARKROYAL On Pickering in Singapore is one of our favourite spots in the city. Even if you’re not staying at the five-star hotel, it’s worth a visit for its beautiful architecture alone. Foregoing the standard designs other chain hotels can have, WOHA – the firm responsible for the hotel’s architecture, created something truly unique and lively. The Singapore-based architects are renowned for prioritising environmental concerns when it comes to building design. These principles have informed the PARKROYAL On Pickering too, which has resulted in the hotel being one of the most sustainably designed hotels in the city.

Design

Without a doubt, PARKROYAL On Pickering is an immaculately designed hotel. It’s easy to see how much thought has gone into ensuring it’s sustainable while still remaining a premier luxury hotel. It makes for a welcome change from the plethora of other modern buildings and skyscrapers that dot the city’s skyline. Comprised of three separate buildings joined with topographical architecture interludes, the hotel is undeniably distinct. The use of a borrowed scenery from the adjacent Hong Lim Park as well as all the greenery on the building’s exterior makes the PARKROYAL On Pickering a true visual marvel.

The abundant use of wood in the hotel interiors offers a sense of warmth from the moment you step into the reception. Greenery is also found throughout, giving the entire space a refreshing feel. This is also carried into the rooms themselves, which makes them feel very natural, open, and spacious. Hotel rooms can often feel stuffy or just way over-designed but PARKROYAL On Pickering has successfully avoided this. Also notable is the fact that they have the SAYL Chair by Herman Miller as the desk chairs in the rooms. It really goes to show the keen attention paid to the detail at PARKROYAL On Pickering; make no mistake, it’s firmly a design hotel.PARKROYAL On Pickering Review | A Well-Designed & Sustainable Hotel PARKROYAL On Pickering Review | A Well-Designed & Sustainable Hotel

Heading outside again, a series of well-designed cabanas that look like bird cages line the hotel’s beautiful infinity pool. Protruding from the building, the cabanas give you a sense of actually being in a bird cage suspended above the city. They feature sun covers that come down when it’s hot, and when it gets cooler, they lift again, offering some stunning views of the city.

The Orchid Club Lounge at PARKROYAL On Pickering is another well-designed and thought out part of the hotel. As a guest of the club, you’re privy to a few more premium offerings from the hotel. These include a champagne breakfast, evening cocktails, and espresso coffee and tasty treats served all day. The lounge itself is impressive too. The light and airy room offers abundant space to eat, relax, or get work done.

Sustainability

The first giveaway about the hotel’s commitment to sustainability is the lush greenery that sprawls across the building’s facade. Aside from giving the hotel a unique look, it also serves a very useful function. Buildings usually retain and emit heat long after the sun has gone down. The plants on the hotel’s exterior help to absorb the heat and keep the surrounding area cool. This is also aided by the mote-like water feature on the street front of the building.

WOHA have also successfully mitigated the need for superfluous air conditioning in the building by making the corridors to the rooms external. When you think about it, how often do you actually hang around the space between your room and the lift? The answer is most likely not often at all, so what’s the point of using energy to cool that space?

The PARKROYAL On Pickering’s wider sustainable practices also extend into the hotel rooms themselves. Small things like re-filling the water bottles in the room with filtered water instead of using new bottles every time is a significant reduction in plastic waste. Furthermore, the rooms feature electric double blinds. Closing one layer shades the room and closing the second blocks out light. This is a great energy saver, reducing the need to turn on the light when you want to have your blinds shut, as well as lowering air conditioning usage.
